Don't confuse closing time with last admission. Walking in at 5 PM for a 6 PM close means sprinting through the great nave. For a visit worthy of the name, be through the doors before 3:30 PM — or aim for Thursday evening, which gives you nearly 4 hours.

Public holidays and exceptional closures

The museum closes three times a year, always on the same dates:

  • Every Monday — no exceptions, even on public holidays;
  • May 1 — Labor Day in France;
  • December 25 — Christmas Day.

On other French public holidays (July 14, August 15, November 1, November 11, January 1…), the museum is open at its usual hours if the holiday falls between Tuesday and Sunday — and these are often very busy days, with Parisians joining the tourists. On December 24 and 31, closing time may be brought forward: check the official website the day before.

The Monday question

Orsay closed on Mondays, the Louvre closed on Tuesdays: it's the classic Paris museum seesaw. The direct consequence — Tuesday is Orsay's busiest day, as it absorbs the visitors locked out of the Louvre. If your schedule allows, aim for Wednesday or Friday.

The best hours, backed by crowd data

9:30–10:30 AM
Quiet galleries — go straight up to the fifth floor
11 AM–3 PM
Peak: tour groups + cruise passengers + school trips
4–5 PM
Crowds drop off sharply, golden light in the nave
Thu 6–9:45 PM
The quietest slot of the week, for €12

The Thursday evening opening deserves a special mention: a €12 ticket instead of €16, galleries almost empty after 7:30 PM, and the night view over the Seine and Sacré-Cœur through the fifth-floor clock. Photographers prefer it to any other slot — details in our guide to avoiding the lines.

Season-wise: November to February (outside school holidays) offers the quietest days. April–October and the Christmas holidays concentrate the crowds, with online slots selling out several days in advance.

Building your visit around the hours

Book your time slot — mandatory since March 2026, including for free admission. Slots run every 30 minutes; entry is guaranteed within the half-hour that follows.
Arrive 10–15 minutes early — no earlier than the time printed on the ticket: early entry is refused, and the forecourt offers no shelter.
Allow 20 minutes between the security check and actually reaching the galleries on busy days (cloakroom included).
Keep 45 minutes at the end for the bookshop-boutique and one last pass along the nave balconies — the galleries start being cleared 30 minutes before closing.

The full time budget is detailed in our ticket guide. And if you're arriving by train, see the route from Gare Saint-Lazare.

Ready for Orsay?
